Consider the following before you start working on a role:
- Are the hours reasonable and within the working time directive?
- Is the pay reasonable and at the market rate?
- What are the clients’ expectations, and will you be able to manage these?
- Is the client on your wavelength, and will it be possible to have a good, ongoing relationship with them?
Don’t be afraid to turn away work if you believe the client will be difficult to work with. Working with the wrong client on a job that will be extremely difficult to fill is not only a waste of your time but could affect your reputation as a recruiter. Similarly, do not be afraid to question the hiring manager, and to be transparent about the difficulties you may face.
Understand the Needs
A good recruiter is someone who will listen to both the client’s/manager’s needs and ensure the two are aligned. A bad recruiter is so desperate to fill a role, that they will send anyone and hope that it sticks. The problem with this approach is that, yes, you might fill the role, but the candidate is unlikely to stay, and this will affect your success as a recruiter. It is important to ensure you know exactly what the client is looking for, and that you take time to consider the needs of the candidate before you try and place the two together.
